my first attempt at painting with gouache.
this pretty much sums up how i feel about rain.

value studies. working out lights and darks in the composition with the added challenge of making it look like a night time scene.

two color studies. i like the mood of the one on the right.
i’m posting some of my work from the illustration class i took recently. our phenomenal instructor rob pastrana coached us on how to develop an illustration from brainstorm to finished work.
the first assignment was to illustrate a bizarre-but-true news article. i chose one about british farmers hiring armed guards to protect their crops from giant bunnies.

i couldn’t get the image of a king kong rabbit out of my head. instead of skyscraper, he’s on top of a grain silo and the damsel in distress in this scenario is, of course, a carrot.

getting closer.

final cleaned-up version.
a couple of friends and i got together at echo park yesterday to sketch. it was an unbelievably gorgeous day so we sat outside and sketched over brunch. the french toast stuffed with chocolate ganache was pretty good. surprisingly neither the chocolate nor the syrup ended up on my sketchbook.
so…i was supposed to start this blog months ago when i was taking an illustration class at the art center in pasadena. it was really so exciting as i had never taken a formal painting class before and thought it would be neat to document my process. long story short…i never got around to it.
the class ended.
i’m still drawing and painting. so far.
let’s just see where this goes.
